In 1797, he joined the army and was posted to Belle-Ile on the Atlantic coast. With the help of BERNARD LACÉPÈDE, then working at the Museum of Natural History in Paris, Bory was appointed as a naturalist on the Bougainville, Louis-Antoine, comte de French Pacific expedition of 1800–04 under the command of Nicolas Baudin. The ship sailed south past Madeira, the Cape Verde Islands, and the Canaries. By the time they arrived in l’Île de France (now Mauritius), a nearmutiny erupted and several members of the crew and some of the scientists, Bory among them, left the ship.
In the fashion of university education of his day, scholars traveled to hear specific professors lecture in their disciplines. Thus, Bernoulli spent a year in Heidelberg (1718) and another in Strasbourg (1719) and finally finished his medical studies in 1720. His father continued to teach him mathematics at home and by letter, and he worked on the theories of kinetic energy and conservation of energy, applying these concepts to medicine. The doctoral dissertation Bernoulli presented was on the mechanics of breathing.
