Many members of the Bloomsbury group (a circle of writers and artists that included Forster, Keynes, and Russell) were associated with or on the faculty there, and as Alan made his way around the campus, and later, when he had dining privileges, he certainly had many opportunities to strike up conversation—but Turing was no more outgoing and social at college than he had been at Sherborne. Turing’s combination of physical awkwardness and energy showed in his athletic efforts, While at King’s College, Turing joined the Boat Club—rowing being a popular sport at Cambridge and Oxford.
A mathematical function is essentially a statement of relationship between input and output. For example, the value of the function f(x) = 2x for any value × would be double that value. Thus if x = 4, f(x) = 8. Turing then defined computability in terms of the ability to apply a series of specified steps—an algorithm. If an algorithm could be shown to always provide a definite result for any value put into the function, then that function is computable. Next, Turing needed a mechanical method for applying an algorithm by combining a set of simple operations.
From this idea, formulated by the German physicist Werner Heisenberg as the Uncertainty Principle, Turing concluded that human actions, too, could not be solely determined by physical causation. He suggested that “We have a will which is able to determine the actions of the atoms probably in a small portion of the brain, or possibly all over it. ” This “will” might be evidence that what Turing called spirit is intimately connected to, but separate from, the body. He suggests: An unusual Child 13 resolved that he would undertake his work with a new seriousness, feeling that he now had an obligation to fulfill Morcom’s potential as well as his own.
